Things can only get better…

The new year hasn’t really quite started yet, and already it seems to have the same stale flavour to it as the last.  I am not that young, and I thought that maybe with age, I could handle some things in a less emotional way. However, it seems to not be the case. It still makes me downright furious when friends of mine, as well as others have to cope with judgemental, biased, and prejudiced persons.

To narrow the subject in, I am talking about my gay and lesbian friends here. I really hoped, twenty years ago, that people would change — alas, they didn’t.

Still I have to lead the same stupid discussions, ranging from whether being gay is a sin, to trying and arguing people out of  finding gays disgusting. I try to be kind though, and not to slice someone’s belief to pieces with a few swings of the Prussian sabre of my tongue.

That it is not what I personally have to deal with — as I am not lesbian — doesn’t lessen the feeling that it is my issue. Silence gives consent. I know what my friends had to endure, and what battles they had to fight, which also made them what they are today; brave, open-hearted, great persons. If they weren’t gay, … well they are, and it is a part of how they are, inseparable from the rest.

The degree and kind of a man’s sexuality reach up into the ultimate pinnacle of his spirit. — Nietzsche.

What a lovely and fitting way to put it. In Hollywood, there currently seems to be a movement called “de-gaying”, which means, e.g. that Jim Carrey says “I love you Phillip Morris” was not a gay movie, the main characters were just by chance gay, it was a movie about love, etc.

Love is love, in whatever flavour it comes. But — I strongly disagree. You face different problems which shape you into a different person. You can tell by the difference the news is received of an actor cheating on his wife with a girl, and of an actor apparently cheating his wife with another man.

In German you say, “no use comparing pears with apples”. However hard you strive to make things equal, and pretend it all to be the same — it is not. It is undervaluing — or even denying — the tough decisions people have to make when coming out, and to live an out life.

Just as a sidenote: My fondest feelings for Daniel Ratcliffe here, who is NOT gay, and still makes the issue his own.

This somehow made my day so far — So, to give the year a better start, a heart-warming song from the nineties, praying for it to finally have a grain of truth in it.

THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER

You can walk my path, you can wear my shoes
Learn to talk like me and be an angel too
But maybe you ain’t never gonna feel this way
You ain’t never gonna know me, but I know you

Im singing it now, things can only get better
They can only get better if we see it through
That means me and I mean you too

So teach me now that things can only get better
They can only get, they can only get, take it on from here
You know, I know that things can only get better

I sometimes lose myself in me, I lose track of time
And I can’t see the woods for the trees, you set them alright
Burn the bridges as you’ve gone, I’m too weak to fight ya
I’ve got my personal hell to deal with

And then you say
“Walk my path, wear my shoes
Talk like that, I’ll be an angel”

And things can only get better
They can only get better now I found you
(Things can only get, can only get)
Things can only get better
They can only get better now I found you and you and you

You have shown me prejudice and greed
And you’ve shown me how I must learn to deal with this disease
I look at things now in a different light than I did before
And I’ve found the cause and I think that you can be my cure

So teach me to walk your path, wear your shoes
Talk like that, I’ll be an angel

And things can only get better
They can only get better now I found you
(Things can only get, can only get)
Things can only get better
They can only get better now I found you

Things can only get, can only get
Things can only get, can only get
Things can only get, things can only get
Things can only get

Things can only get better
They can only get better now I found you
(Things can only get, can only get)
And you and you and you baby
Things can only get better
They can only get better now I found you

  1. Nvm, I can’t help but caring for the issue, and have done so since I can remember. I just wanted to actually write it down, and not go with the masses who won’t talk about it, sometimes mistaking silence for tolerance. This blog is linked to on my facebook page, assigned with my real name — I have no problem at all expressing my point to whomever. If some persons have a problem with it, so be it.
Funnily, the persons who you would least expect it from sometimes turn out to be the most broad-minded. Anyway, my attitude towards the matter is a part of me.
